PBS in Perth: Positive Behaviour Support for everyday life

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) helps people with disability and the people around them understand what may be driving behaviour, then put practical support in place at home, school, work and in the community.

Behaviour Bridge is a mobile service. We review referrals for NDIS funding, location, current capacity and practitioner fit; submitting a referral does not guarantee acceptance.

The short answer

What is PBS, and how does it help in Perth?

PBS means Positive Behaviour Support. It starts by asking what a behaviour might be communicating and what in a person’s environment, routines, relationships or communication could be changed to improve daily life. The aim is not simply to stop a behaviour; it is to understand the person and make support safer, more useful and more respectful.

At Behaviour Bridge, PBS may involve a functional behaviour assessment, an individualised Behaviour Support Plan, practical strategies and coaching for the people implementing them. The right approach depends on the participant’s needs and the referral review. The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission explains Positive Behaviour Support as understanding why a person acts in a certain way and how to better meet their needs.

In plain English: If a plan says “use a different response”, someone still has to know how that response works during the morning routine, a school transition or a shift change. Behaviour Bridge focuses on making strategies understandable and usable in those everyday moments.
What support can involve

From assessment to strategies people can actually use

Understand the context

Look at communication, unmet needs, environments and patterns across the person’s real-life settings. A functional behaviour assessment may be part of this work.

Develop a plan

Where appropriate, create an interim or comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan with clear, individualised ways to support the person.

Implement and review

Work with families, support teams and relevant services to practise strategies, see what changes and refine support over time.

Where restrictive practices are relevant, support is considered in line with applicable NDIS requirements and a focus on reducing reliance on restrictive practices. Explore Behaviour Bridge’s services.

Where Behaviour Bridge provides PBS across Perth

Our Perth practitioners work in the environments where support is needed, subject to current capacity, location and fit. Current practitioner areas include the northern corridor around Wanneroo and Joondalup, Swanbourne and coastal north-west suburbs including City Beach, Scarborough, Trigg and Karrinyup, and Perth metro. Rhea also supports parts of the South West. We review each referral individually rather than promising coverage of every suburb.

Looking for a specific area? Read our service areas overview and local pages for Fremantle and Scarborough, or include the participant’s suburb when you refer.

Common questions

Questions families ask about PBS in Perth

Is PBS the same as a Behaviour Support Plan?

Not exactly. PBS is the broader approach: understanding the person, assessing the context, planning practical strategies and helping people implement and review them. A Behaviour Support Plan records strategies where one is required.

Can parents or carers refer directly?

Yes. Parents and carers can complete the referral form themselves; a Support Coordinator is not required just to begin. We review the participant’s NDIS funding and suitability with the referral.

Can a practitioner come to a Perth home or school?

Behaviour Bridge operates as a mobile service, with support in relevant everyday settings such as home, school and community. Whether a particular location and setting can be supported is confirmed after referral review.

How quickly can services start?

Timing depends on location, current capacity, funding, needs and practitioner fit. We do not promise a start date before reviewing the referral. Submit the details so the team can advise on the next step.
